New Bridge and Public Realm, Laxey.

This project involved the design of a new bridge and public space in Laxey following the collapse of the previous stone bridge during severe storms. The brief was to create a replacement structure that meets modern engineering and safety standards while responding sensitively to the character of the village and provide enhanced landscaped areas. The design was developed through a public consultation process, helping to inform a solution that reflects the identity of the local community. The Department of Infrastructure’s chosen design incorporates Manx stone and black polished concrete, creating a contemporary structure that remains rooted in local material traditions. The bridge is also adorned with two ornamental miniature lighthouses, referencing the island’s maritime heritage. The wider scheme includes improvements to the surrounding public realm, incorporating a seating area and paved walkway that enhance the setting and create a welcoming space for residents and visitors.
